Our Learning Assistant for Comm Lab (Fall 2016) is Maggie Walsh. Her office hours are Wednesday: 4:15-6:15, Thursday: 3-5, Friday: 3-4
Guidelines for submitting assignments:
- Every student must submit their own documentation to the documentation blog.
- The documentation post must have a link to the project on the NAS when applicable.
- Documentation must include written descriptions, screen shots, images and/or links to any work, inspirations, references or other materials.
- A link to the documentation blog post must be posted on NYU Classes. The assignment will not count until it is submitted on NYU Classes.

- Project 2: Interactive comic
- Due Monday, October 10
- Post website on the NAS
- Write a documentation post with the link to the project and post on NYU Classes. Each group member must write their own documentation!
- Rubric:
- 20% Files - files and folders named correctly, no broken links, broken images
- 20% HTML/CSS
- 20% JavaScript
- 40% Interaction
- Choose a narrative style (linear, branching, web, generated)
- Implemented with JavaScript / HTML
- Clear interface, interaction to user
Week 6
- Audio
- Discuss “Embrace the Remix”
- Project 3: Audio
- Due Monday, October 24
- In groups of two, create an audio project combining recorded audio and other sources at least 1 minute in length.
- This piece can be environmental, musical, create space or mood, or tell a story through sound. Create a website to host the audio file.
- This website can be an interactive work using the audio or a container with an audio player.
- Website must have CSS styles for all appropriate elements.
- Rubric:
- 20% File structure
- 20% HTML/CSS
- 20% JavaScript
- Website can be interactive sound elements or audio player for a single piece of audio
- 20% Audio editing
- Smooth transitions and edits
- Noise removal where appropriate
- Clear and balanced
- 20% Sound piece structure
- For narrative work, there must be a beginning, middle and end to the story with clear transitions between sections
- For music or environmental peices, sound should be cohesive and mixed appropriately
- Reading: “The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism” by Jonathan Lethem. Post a response to the class blog. Due Wednesday, October 12.
- Reading: “On the Rights of Molotov Man” by Joy Garnett and Susan Meiselas. Post a response to the class blog. Due Wednesday, October 12.

- Groups of 3
- Create a short video, 3 - 5 minutes.
- Must follow a narrative structure with beginning, middle and end.
- Can be fiction, documentary or interactive.
- Watch: Chimamanda Adichie’s TED talk: “The Danger of a Single Story”. Post a response to the class blog, due Wednesday, October 26.
- Read: Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”. Post a response to the class blog. Due Monday, October 31.
- Storyboarding
- Story board template
- Genre in film/video
- Assignment: With your group, outline the basic plot of your story and create a story board based on the plot. This can be done with hand drawings or digitally, but must include a list of shots, dialog and basic plot structure. Keep in mind that the videos will be relatively short. Make your storyboards as succinct as possible to tell the story you want to tell. Due Monday, October 31.
